World Series Non Starter

Well we are rapidly approaching that time of the year again where many tens of thousands of poker players go absolutely potty and head off to good old LV for the annual jamboree that is the WSOP. Heaven only knows how many people will come back with a bracelet and a title of "world champion this or that".

Once again I will not be going…..why…..simply becasue it is not the place to be for me personally. I dont like hot places and I hate humidity and I have also had my fair share of stuffy card rooms full of moaning idiots thanks. But what are the chances of someone making it through those massive fields these days? It is an absolute lottery to win one of those things and for all those people who say that you cannot get lucky for ten days or whatever length the main event is these days then I seriously beg to differ.

When tournament and cash game professionals go on losing runs that last months even online then what price ten days of live poker. Even if you win a bracelet then this is still no guarantee that it will turbo charge your career. How many recent winners of WSOP, WPT and EPT titles have faded into obscurity. This is simply because there is so many of them.

So I really dont fancy travelling thousands of miles (I hate flying) to bust out of half a dozen tournaments and be about $20,000 in the red for the trip and then flying back thinking why the hell I bothered in the first place.

Poker is what you make it and you can achieve tremendous things without having to win some title because most of the players who win them are not all that strong technically to be honest and would struggle in online cash games. But tournament poker is a place where bad play and indiscipline can be rewarded very well….its not for me.
