World Series Figures

I have just seen the latest figures for the 2008 World Series and it has broken all records. But this was no real surprise to me. The poker boom still has a lot of life left in it and to be honest, I feel that it is here to stay. A bit like electricity and nuclear power…..it might be dangerous but it still has tremendous uses.

So what use does poker have? Well I already know the answer to that question but if anyone has to ask that question then they just dont understand poker or at least not at a high enough level. For a start, it is perhaps the most interesting pastime that I have ever participated in and I have been very passionate about a few things down the years.

Snooker, Chess, Blackjack, Science Fiction, War Theory, Statistics……I find poker more interesting than any of those topics but I also have to say that there are many elements of those fields that dovetail with poker too. So the bottom line is that the game is just too damn interesting and absorbing and it grips you the more that you understand the game but I suppose that most fields can be like that.

But the point that I am trying to make here is that it was less than 2 years ago that everyone was all doom and gloom with regards the latest laws coming out of the United States regarding online poker. I said at the time that poker was just too big for any one law to kill it and that poker would circumvent the problem (if you dont believe me then just click on the very first month or two of my blogs and you will see it).

To me, the sheer desire of people who wanted to play the game and the desire of the businessmen who wanted to make their money in poker was always going to be bigger than the US government. You can bring out as many laws as you want but someone please tell me how you surpress desire, committment and determination.

So poker is back bigger than ever and I for one am glad……but not surprised.
