Pro’s Don’t Always Play For Highstakes
I don’t usually crow about the money that I win at poker but this after this week, I am going to make an exception. Anyone who has read my interview with Hendon Mobster Joe Beevers will be only too aware that he sometimes plays as low as $1-$2 PL Omaha.
Many players who are new to the game would be shocked to hear about such distinguished a pro playing as low as that…..but why? Some of the juiciest and best games can be found at that low -limit. I have played NL hold’em ring games as high as £25-£50 ($50-$100 at the exchange rate) but I frequently play at $1-$2 as well.
I will not just blindly play at 25-50 unless I get wind of a live one or two at those levels and I can trust the game. This rarely happens so there is not much sense in locking horns with other top players. But this week was my best ever week at $1-$2. I did not have much writing work to do so I concentrated on poker for the first time in quite a while but $3800 ahead for the week playing no more than one table was my best ever result at those limits.
It seems to me that the lower you play, the more out of proportion to the blinds the pots become. My hourly rate at this level is nothing short of phenomenal so far but my “Statking” software is still warning me that I am still short of playing the required number of hours to ensure the accuracy of the results…..but what a week. Who says that you have to play big to win decent money.
