No One Is Safe!
Found out this week that the 2004 World Series of Poker winner and all round nice guy Greg “Fossilman” Raymer of Pokerstars has had his account hacked into. Not surprising that the hackers targeted Greg with the stakes that he plays online. But this is a very serious problem for online poker but the way that I see it, it is no more of a problem than walking out of a casino with your money stuffed in your inside pocket.
I have been followed on more than one occasion after winning sizeable chunks of money and had to run for my life….or should I say wallet. It is a scary thing when you are walking through a strange city at four in the morning and your car is parked in a multi-story car park and you have three dudes following you and shadowing your every move.
Before people start running for cover, thieves have always been attracted to poker and gambling simply because they have always been attracted to money and there is plenty of money in poker. I have played in games where revolvers have been drawn (not used) and I also know pickpockets personally who go after gamblers. So the bottom line is that you have to protect yourself just as much online as you would inside your local casino, expect anything and trust no one.
